After this session attendees should be able to:

  1. Recognize the new 2011 OARSI construct and definition of OA.
  2. Understand the contribution of lower limb OA to excess morbidity and mortality.
  3. Identify the pathophysiology of pain, including the role of central pain,in patients with knee OA.
  4. Discuss the change in perspectives of placebo in recent 
  5. Specify the 3 factors that influence the magnitude of the placebo response in osteoarthritis clinical trials
  6. Discuss at least 5 factors that influence the improvement experienced by patients with chronic pain following an intervention from a health practitioner
  7. Review the the studies of glucosamine and chondroitin for knee OA pain
  8. Review new medications approved for the treatment of knee OA pain
  9. Review the biology of Nerve Growth Factor and how inhibition of this protein can reduce peripheral pain.
